Ilham Aliyev attended reopening of Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque after its restoration

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, visited the Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque following its reopening after restoration.

During the visit, Anar Alekberov, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, provided detailed information to the head of state about the restoration project.

The Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque, which suffered from Armenian vandalism during the occupation of Shusha, has undergone comprehensive restoration. The building and minarets were severely damaged by Armenian armored vehicle fires.

Since December 2021, restoration efforts have been led by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, with support from “PASHA Holding”. Specialists from Austria, Italy, Latvia, and Turkiye collaborated on the project.

The restoration project extended to the adjacent madrasa building on the mosque grounds.

A museum has been established in the historical madrasa building. Named the “Museum of Karabakh and East Zangezur: Before and After Occupation. Revival,” the exhibition showcases pre-occupation periods of Karabakh and East Zangezur, destruction of religious monuments by Armenians during the occupation, historical and cultural artifacts, ecological facts, and information, photos, and videos about the region’s revival today.

Visitors to the museum can explore various publications related to the region and enjoy works from the international photo project “Four Seasons in Shusha,” highlighting landscapes of the city, known as the pearl of Karabakh.
